The century old Narrandera Show Society, formed in the 1880s as the Narrandera Pastoral and Agricultural Society has been forced to close.

It has now donated the $25,000 left in its account to a very worthy recipient Narrandera Can Assist.

Spokeswoman Sandra Hornbuckle said the group had tried three times to call a meeting without success as only one person volunteered to help keep the show going.

“The third meeting was a crisis meeting and despite posters, internet posts etc no one attended,” she said.

Narrandera Show was one of the region’s longest-running cultural institutions.

For over 140 years, it hosted the annual agricultural and industrial show at the Elizabeth Street Narrandera Showground in Elizabeth Street.

The first Narrandera Show was held in September 1882 and was described by The Sydney Morning Herald as a great success.

Narrandera Senior Citizens donated $1000 to Narrandera Can Assist.

A donation of $1000 was made by the Narrandera Senior Citizens Club to Neta Close of Can Assist Narrandera to help people going through cancer to help pay for medical, travel and accommodation expenses.

The Senior Citizens Club was formed in 1972 and is always ready to welcome new members. It’s a great way to get involved with fund-raising a top priority.

The delicious cake stall and raffle sales at Kiesling lane on Saturday made for a great location for the cheque presentation to Can Assist from some of the recent fundraising events run by the Senior Citizens Club.

This year marks a special milestone for Can Assist with the introduction of the Colvin Community Award, created in our 70th anniversary year to honour the long and proud association with the Colvin family. Inspired by Jean Colvin’s tireless work supporting people facing cancer, and strengthened through the ongoing commitment of Patron John Colvin, the award recognises quiet achievers whose sustained efforts keep local branches strong and country patients supported.

Mudgee — Cudgegong Cruisers

For nearly two decades, the Cudgegong Cruisers have turned their passion for motoring into a powerful force for good. Their annual Can Cruise – complete with BBQ, auction and a colourful convoy – has raised significant funds over the years, helping Mudgee residents access vital support during treatment.

Parkes — Central West Car Club

The Central West Car Club has also stood firmly beside its community for more than 15 years. Through ongoing shows and events, the club has contributed many tens of thousands of dollars, ensuring the Parkes Branch can assist locals with travel, accommodation, medication and other essentials during cancer treatment.

Narrandera — Header Drivers Convention

For over a decade, the Header Drivers Convention, driven by organiser Neil Seidel, has grown from a small local fundraiser to a major community event. Their efforts have resulted in substantial contributions that directly benefit Narrandera cancer patients.

Manning Valley — Gary Bridge & Family

Gary Bridge transformed personal heartbreak into community impact. In honour of his daughter, he created the Kristylea Bridge Charity Cup Football Day, later expanding his efforts to include a charity race day. Gary and his family have since raised an extraordinary total that has deeply strengthened the Manning Valley Branch.

A Message of Thanks

“Every one of these recipients reminds us what community truly means,” says Can Assist CEO, Nici Andronicus. “Their generosity may happen quietly, but its impact is loud and life‑changing. We are deeply grateful for the support they show to country people facing cancer.”

Narrandera Header Drivers Convention has attracted a record number of sponsors for its 2026 event to be held on Friday 6 February at the Narrandera Race Club.

Its fund-raising efforts are for Can Assist Narrandera and this year it hopes to better the $32,850 it raised last year. In 2024 it raised $28,000 and $25,322 in 2023.

Chief organiser Neil Seidel said he was delighted that more new sponsors had come on board – Leeton Home Improvements, McGrath Riverina, Deep Creek Renovations, Painting Farming, Hewitt Cattle Company, Tarcoola Turf, CBOR Pty Ltd, Betta Electrical and Eddie Ratcliffe Fencing.

“It just keeps on breaking records in attendance and sponsorship,” Mr Seidel said.

Header Drivers Convention major sponsor Shane Mathieson of Riverina Ag Repairs Narrandera has come on board yet again for the 2025 event.

Mr Seidel said it was the generous sponsors who made the event possible, as did the people who attended the function itself.

“It’s a terrific way of raising funds for a very worthy cause and at the same time its an enjoyable night for all who attend. We plan to continue this fundraiser for as long as possible.”

Narrandera Can Assist president Neta Close expressed thanks to the organisers, sponsors and everyone who attends and assured everyone that the funds would be put to very good use again this year.

It was a chance encounter in the street between Neil and Neta which resulted in Neil offering to donate all the convention money to Can Assist and the fund-raising tally has grown annually to tens of thousands of dollars.

“The money raised helps to provide cancer patients with financial help so we are extremely grateful. It was great work by the organisers and then they just handed the money over to Can Assist,” Neta said.

Neil said it was the sponsors and their generosity who also deserved commendation.

Six beautiful gardens were generously opened for viewing for the Narrandera Town and Country Open Garden Day event on Sunday.

A variety of gardens were on offer for visitors to explore – from large farm, and semi-rural, to small suburban gardens. ‘Boree Park’ featured repeat plantings of lavender, Ligustrum, Iceberg roses and Escallonia to great effect.

Gardens within town offered a wide range of styles, from a much loved cottage garden to a tranquil green oasis with relaxation at it’s core.

The day brought together several community groups, with Can Assist providing Devonshire Tea, CWA offering a delicious lunch, and Narrandera Garden Club handling ticket sales and the Plant Stall.

Local businesses, ProTen, Hutchins Bros Engineering, Manildra, Bendigo Bank, McGrath Real Estate, The Shady Gum Nursery and Gunn’s Mitre 10 generously lent their support to the event.

Organisers would like to thank the garden owners, attendees and volunteers who assisted in creating a wonderful event in support of Can Assist Narrandera.
