When Mal was diagnosed with throat cancer, he and Alison were suddenly navigating treatment in Sydney, long separations from their children, and the financial strain of living far from home. With no active Can Assist branch on the Mid North Coast, their accommodation and medical expenses support came directly from our Sydney office – a lifeline they hadn’t even known existed.

It was Alison’s sister, a palliative care nurse in Glen Innes, who first told them about the Glen Innes Can Assist branch and the extraordinary practical help it provides to local families. Hearing how freely that support flowed in other regions made something very clear: their own community needed this too.

As fuel prices rise and travel becomes even harder for country patients, Mal and Alison know that families on the Mid North Coast are facing bigger barriers than ever. They also know that awareness often begins one household at a time. When a patient outside a branch area receives help – as they did – they become messengers. They share the name “Can Assist” in hospitals, waiting rooms, workplaces, and kitchens. And sometimes, that spark is exactly how new branches begin.

Now home and recovering, Mal and Alison are committed to helping reactivate a Mid North Coast branch – so no local family has to face cancer without a community beside them.

5yr old Tommy from Glen Innes woke up one morning very pale and with notable bruising; his Mum took him straight to the doctor. That same afternoon, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle and was diagnosed with Leukemia.

This was the beginning of a whirlwind for the Gill family – Mum, Dad and 2 younger siblings who were only 3yr and 6 months respectively at the time. Including various stays in hospital, Tommy, his two younger siblings and Mum accommodated at nearby Ronald MacDonald House for 12 months whilst treatment continued.

Initially, both parents stopped working, but needing to maintain a family income Lincoln would eventually return to work. From then on, he would make the 860 km, 11-hour return journey to Newcastle each weekend to be with his family.

After Tommy returned home, he developed a lung infection, and he was again flown back to Newcastle where he spent a further 1 month in hospital (half of which was in ICU).

After all the heartache, Tommy now has now been given a clean bill of health, and a 3rd sibling – baby Clare.

The Gills travelled well in excess of 50,000 km over the course of Tommy’s treatment: around 150 trips in total. “I couldn’t put a number on what we spent…. then there was the time off work and all the extra travel, we could not have got through it without the help of charities like Can Assist who provided us with multiple travel vouchers” Sam Gill, mother of Tommy.

In April, Michael and Cate Jorgensen cycled to raise money and to raise cancer awareness in the Tour de Cure. The tour gave back to the communities on their route which included a donation of $10,000 to Can Assist Glenn Innes. Their contribution added to the record $2.6 million raised by the whole tour. Both thanked the entire Inverell community for the support shown to them on their mission.
