Harden Celebrates 25 Years

More than 80 guests gathered at the Harden Country Club on Saturday, 18 July, to celebrate 25 years of Can Assist Harden-Murrumburrah supporting local people affected by cancer.

Originally part of the Young/Boorowa/Harden branch, the Harden-Murrumburrah branch was established in 2001 after local community members recognised the need for dedicated support closer to home. Inspired by Monica O’Connor’s family’s experience with cancer, founding members including Brian Dunn, Nikki Bolger, Chris Manchester and Monica O’Connor helped create a branch that has since become a lifeline for countless local families.

Over the past 25 years, the branch has raised vital funds through community events including golf and bowls days, trivia nights, Dancing with the Locals, black-tie balls, bike rides and even an Elvis Night. A generous bequest from Patricia and Graham Kemp also helped establish the much-loved Corridor of Life parkland in Murrumburrah.

Julie and Peter O’Connor

The anniversary celebration featured entertainment by Julie and Peter O’Connor, heartfelt speeches from Tim O’Connor, Steph Cooke MP, Richard Moffat from Lillier Lodge and Monica O’Connor, and the draw of a 25th birthday raffle with more than $15,000 in prizes.

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of Life Membership to founding member and long-serving voluntary medical adviser Nikki Bolger, recognising her outstanding commitment and compassionate care over the past quarter century.

The branch’s impact has grown significantly, with annual assistance increasing from $1,685 in 2001 to more than $63,000 in 2025, helping ensure local people can access cancer treatment without facing the journey alone.

Reflecting on the milestone, Treasurer Maryanne Fitzgerald said, “I am so proud of everything our branch has achieved in the past 25 years and what we continue to offer to our community.”

The celebration was a fitting tribute to the volunteers, supporters and donors whose generosity has made 25 years of local cancer support possible – and a reminder that, thanks to Can Assist Harden-Murrumburrah, no one has to face cancer alone.

Steve when he commenced the collections

Harden local Steve Pinney began collecting cans and bottles from friends and family to make a bit of extra spending money while doing something to help the planet.

But after a battle with prostate cancer, he started to think about how he could help others going through a similar ordeal. He decided to donate to the Harden-Murrumburrah branch of Can Assist, to help assist other people in his rural area with access to cancer treatment and care.

His daughter Melissa Pinney said that he looked for ways to involve more people and collect more containers.

“Through word-of-mouth and support from the local newspaper and radio station, word started getting out. Steve offers a pick-up service for elderly residents, and also arranges collection from local events and businesses.

“The 2023 Harden Picnic Races had the biggest result for a single event so far, with around 6,600 containers able to be returned. That meant $660 was raised from just one event,” said Melissa.

Steve cleans and sorts all the donated containers to redeem through Return and Earn, and donates the money to Can Assist. Sometimes members of the Can Assist committee help with the sorting after big events.

“It’s very different work to his career as a Postal Manager with Australia Post for over 40 years. It is certainly keeping him busy during his retirement though!” said Melissa.

Local support has included container donations from the Light Horse Hotel, the Harden-Murrumburrah Debutante Ball, Rugby League Presentation Night, Harden Kite Festival, weekly collections from the local touch footy competition, a private wedding function, and even the graduation night of the local preschool.

“Since May 2023, over $5,000 has been donated to Can Assist through the voluntary efforts of an amazing local community.

“Harden-Murrumburrah may be considered a small rural community but every can and bottle counts, and the community is well and truly behind Steve’s work to gain donations for Can Assist,” said Melissa.

The recycling is provided by Return and Earn via local business, Parker’s Smash Repairs who accept the sorted cans and bottles, with funds deposited directly into Harden Can Assist branch account. There is also a donation box available at Parker’s for people who want to donate their own recycled product to our branch.

In 2024, Grain Corp released a Community Grants offer; Melissa and members of the Harden branch, with the support of the local Grain Corp members, applied for up to $20,000 grant to enable dedicated bins to be purchased along with signage. Grain Corp generously granted the branch $10,000 which enabled 25 dedicated wheelie bins and 15 dump bins to be purchased. Signage was also factored into the costing with Grain Corp being acknowledged as our generous sponsor. The yellow bins are placed strategically around the Harden District including outlying villages, with more now being ordered due to the growing demand. The local community is offered a bin for their private parties and functions, with bin/s delivered prior and then collected after the event. A drop of area has bins located at the rear of Steve’s home, with people simply needing to drive along the rear lane and leave in the bins provided.

After the purchase of the bins there was a little funds left over, so we were able to purchase further updated and new equipment, including a new A Frame sign, table and cover etc.

The 2026 Australia Day Town Care Award honours a man whose quiet dedication has made a profound impact. Since 2023, Steve Pinney has collected cans and bottles to raise funds for Can Assist, raising more than $20,000 for local cancer patients while helping keep Harden Murrumburrah clean and environmentally conscious. Even while undergoing cancer treatment in 2024 and 2025, Steve continued his efforts, supported by volunteers and community members. By the end of 2025, he had recycled over 210,000 containers, inspiring individuals, businesses and groups to join the cause.

Now, June 2026, the total is currently at $26,000!

A recent call from Deniliquin branch to Steve has seen them set up their own recycling program.

Steve is very happy to take calls from other branches that are considering their own program to give them guidance on how to set up, obtain funding and generally get the community involved. Feel free to call him 0422 284 962 – he would love to help you help your own community.

Harden branch and the local community is very lucky to have Steve and many other people who support us so wonderfully. Our motto is YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE – thank you Steve for helping make sure no one does.

The Annual Harden Can Assist Debutante Ball was held on Friday May 22nd with eight beautiful Debutantes and their very handsome partners enjoying a wonderful day and night. More than $11,000 was raised for local cancer support through this year’s ball, with strong community support helping ensure local families facing cancer can access treatment and care.

The Ball was held in the Mechanics Institute in Harden where 160 family and friends of the Debs and partners enjoyed a night of celebration of the young people. They were presented to Life Member of Can Assist June Howe, and Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke MP.

June and Steph did a wonderful job welcoming the Debs and partners, making sure they were enjoying the experience and settling their nerves.

The Debs and their partners then did the traditional dances for the audience, who were extremely appreciative and supportive of their newfound moves.

Congratulations to you all on taking part in this traditional event for communities and hope you made memories and friends to remember.

Devils, Oliver Fairfield-Smith, President Charlie Brown left and Jack Alcorn right with Can Assist representatives Sonia Fredericks, Carol Barker and Jill Berney receiving a donation from the Devils Club of $4,585 on Saturday.

Saturday was Juniors Day at Roberts Park, and what a day it was for the Red Devils community.
The Devils are proud to support Can Assist Harden and were able to present a cheque on the day to Can Assist. These funds were raised at the Harden Red Devils Golf Day held in February.

Coach Jack Alcorn said, “A huge thank you to our incredible community for your ongoing support. The afternoon kicked off with junior games, along with the U14s and U16s taking on our Women’s side during their bye round. Every game was played in great spirit, and it was awesome to see the next generation of Devils ripping in. Then it was time for the men’s game, with the Harden taking on a tough Cootamundra outfit.

Carol Barker and Steve Pinney presented certificates of appreciation to the Harden Country Motel Managers

The collection of cans, bottles, and plastics for Can Assist hits the three-year mark in April 2026 and so far has raised more than $23,000 to support local families managing cancer treatment and care.

Steve Pinney received the Town Care Award at this year’s Australia Day Ceremony for the work he does with the help of other Can Assist volunteers that assist with counting all the cans, bottles, and plastics collected locally.

As well as raising funds for Can Assist and awareness of this great charity, the Cans for Can Assist Initiative also helps our environment.

Steve likes to have a goal to work towards and his latest target is to reach a total of $25,000 in donations to Can Assist by the end of April 2026. To do this, he needs the continued help and support of our local community.

A couple of local businesses who have been supporting the initiative were recently presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

“We wanted to recognise the support of Jan and Graeme at the Harden Country Motel and their housekeeping team, and Cathy from AtHair. Both organisations ensure regular donations keep coming in.” Can Assist Harden-Murrumburrah President, Carol Barker said.

“If you have an event coming up and you would be interested in being involved, please contact Steve and he will arrange bins or baskets for you to use. He will drop-off and collect for you, or you can drop off to some of the yellow bins that appear around our twin towns.”

“These bins were able to be purchased through a generous grant from GrainCorp in 2024 and have really helped raise awareness of the opportunity our community has to donate containers to support Can Assist’s valuable work.”

There are lots of ways the community can continue to support the Cans for Can Assist initiative and help it reach the target of $25,000 by end of April.

You can call or text Steve Pinney on 0422 284 962 and he will come and collect, or you can drop off into labelled bins at the back lane of 44 Scott Street, out the front of McLean oval, at Murrumburrah Showground, Roberts Park, or behind the Mechanics Institute.

“We welcome anyone who would like to become a Can Assist member and volunteer to help with this initiative,” Carol said.

“Steve has undergone two cancer battles himself in the past two years and it would be great to have more people willing to help count containers ready for pick-up.”

“This initiative has raised more funds than I think anyone imaged it could when Steve first started collecting for Can Assist in 2023,” Carol said.

“It’s great that so many people are willing to donate containers when they have events such as big birthday celebrations or weddings and we also really appreciate the support of local businesses and people who regularly donate their containers for this great cause.”

If you would like to help Can Assist reach the target of $25,000 by end of April 2026, please consider donating your used cans, bottles, or plastics. Or join Can Assist as a volunteer. Everyone is welcome to be part of something that is making a difference to local families battling cancer.

Now in its seventh year, the Barry Coulton Memorial Dice Run continues to remember and honour its namesake who passed away after battling cancer in 2019.

Hosted by the Sacred Syndicate Social Motorcycle Club (Sacred Syndicate SMC), the day-long event raises money for the Harden-Murrumburrah CanAssist organisation.

This year’s event, held on January 24, kicked off at 8.00am at the Roberts Park in Harden where 66 registrations were recorded. 45 bikes were seen on the road, with more dropping in and out during the day.

The ride saw a slew of seasoned motorcyclists interacting with casual drivers in cars and other vehicles, and stopped at a total of four locations. The run covered approximately 250 kilometres of road and followed the same dice run format as the years prior. At each stop, participants rolled dice to accumulate points, with ‘Baddy’ winning the dice run with a total of 136. ‘Uncle’ earned the wooden spoon with a total of 84 after seeing the worst single roll of 8 and ‘Bob Head & Vinnie’ took out the highest single roll at 33.

The true triumph of the day, however, was the amount raised for CanAssist, an organisation that assists those living with cancer in the community. Raising a total of $4681.07, the money will go towards expenses such as travel, accommodation and medical expenses for cancer patients.

Harden-Murrumburrah CanAssist president, Carol Barker, says, “it went off really well.” “They had a good turn up and it was accident-free, which is always a blessing.” The Harden-Murrumburrah CanAssist organisation is looking to celebrate their 25th year of operation this year, with plans well and truly underway to celebrate the work they do for the region.

Sacred Syndicate SMC national president, Vince “Vinnie” Behler, says it’s always a pleasure to support CanAssist, knowing that it directly benefits the community. “We’ve donated more than $25,000 to CanAssist from all of our events,” he says. “And more than $57,000 to the area.”
