While it mightn’t have been the Bay Tigers’ most outstanding season, the club still achieved great things when it made a $13,500 donation to the regional cancer support network, Can Assist.
Holding its annual Ladies Day against Moruya, the Tigers commissioned a set of special pink jerseys, which were auctioned off after the game.
“We had all the women walk out on the field and we made a bit of a fuss,” said Tigers president, Danny Whitter.
“After the games, we had an after-party upstairs, the bar was open, and there was some more music and raffle prizes. It was a really great day.”
Can Assist provides cost-of-living relief, including groceries, petrol and pharmaceutical accounts for medicine for cancer patients in regional areas.
“A couple of years ago, we paid for tyres for a woman because she couldn’t drive her car to the treatment with the tyres she had,” said Elizabeth Basevi, Can Assist’s Eurobodalla president.
“We basically cover anything that they need that somebody else doesn’t cover.”
The charity was selected by Tigers player Broadie Cross, whose mother, Amie Clark, was supported by Can Assist during her own battle with breast cancer.
“It is a massive burden, the price that comes along with getting the diagnosis of cancer,” she said.
“To be able to help Can Assist out with that amount of money is just, you know, it’s absolutely out of this world. And the jerseys are snazzy.”
Danny told the Bay Post that part of the reason the Tigers got behind Can Assist was that all donations are funneled into the local community.
“Each region sort of operates kind of independently, so none of our money goes anywhere but the Eurobodalla,” Elizabeth said.
For Amie, supporting Can Assist was an opportunity to give back to the charity that helped her so much.
“That this group of women really pushes back the money into the community, we can’t be prouder,” she said.
Danny said the donation wouldn’t have been possible without help from supporters such as Batemans Bay Plumbing, Euro Coast Pumpouts, Belle Property, Batemans Bay Windows, GJ Gardner, Dazzled, My Agent and Euro Carwash.
“For a country football club that’s struggling to get sponsors, this just shows the community spirit here to get the sponsors that jumped on board.”
