Helen’s Story

Facing Cancer with Grace and Grit

Helen is a retired nurse from Orange – pragmatic, strong, and used to putting others first. So, when her nosebleeds started, she brushed them off. But after a sudden and concerning episode, Helen realised something wasn’t right.

Living in regional NSW, it was a long and uncertain road to get a diagnosis. Eventually, Helen was diagnosed with nasal cancer. She then had to travel to Sydney for answers, where she underwent a nine hour surgery to remove a nasal tumour that had also spread to her neck. Her recommended treatment was six weeks of radiation therapy, ideally in Sydney, but Helen was determined to stay closer to home. Thankfully, she was able to access treatment in Dubbo instead, however, it was still a significant trip from Forbes.

Retired at the time and fiercely independent, Helen felt the burden of long distance treatment. That’s when a friend told her about Can Assist, and everything changed. “They have just been marvellous, absolutely marvellous,” Helen said. The local Can Assist representative did all the paperwork for Helen – the only administration left for her to do was sign. From organising IPTAAS paperwork to securing fuel vouchers and accommodation in Sydney, Helen felt completely supported. “The financial side of things would have been horrendous, had I not known about this assistance,” she shared. Without Can Assist, she would have had to borrow money or dip into her superannuation.

“I can’t fault them at all,” she said. “They are kind, reassuring and really help people” she reflects that she couldn’t have been treated better.

Helen is a strong believer in early detection and encourages others not to ignore unusual symptoms. “Some doctors might say it’s probably nothing,” she says, “but if something doesn’t feel right — get it checked.” Her experience has made her a passionate advocate for pushing for answers, especially in the country where access to care can take longer. “You’ve gotta just get on with it,” she says. “You’ve gotta do the best you can but getting help early really does make a difference.”

Now cancer free, Helen still goes swimming, enjoys church, lunches with friends, and a good shopping trip. She’s a devoted grandmother and says her beautiful daughter helped her immensely.

A generous spirit herself, Helen was so impressed with Can Assist’s efforts, she made a generous donation after her recovery to give back.
