Guyra BRANCH
Hunter New England Region
Can Assist Guyra was formed in 1995. The Branch is focused on helping local cancer patients and their families. Alongside mainstream organisations within Hunter & New England Health, we can assist with pharmaceutical, accommodation, travel expenses and other utilities to help ease the pressure often felt during cancer.
We are 100% committed to spending the money raised on local patients and their families but also in providing assistance to patients in communities without a Can Assist branch.
Our meetings are held at 3pm, on the first Tuesday of each month at the Guyra Bowling & Recreation Club. Our regular fundraising meat raffles are held at the Royal Hotel 6.30- 7.30pm on the first Friday of the month.
Areas Serviced: Backwater, Bald Blair, Baldersleigh, Bassendean, Ben Lomond, Black Mountain, Boorolong, Briarbrook, Brockley, Brushy Creek, Falconer, Georges Creek, Glen Nevis, Glencoe, Green Hills, Guyra, Llangothlin, Maybole, Mount Mitchell, New Valley, Oban, South Guyra, Tenterden, The Basin, The Gulf, Tubbamurra, Wandsworth
We understand that families struggle to cope with a reduced income as a result of a cancer diagnosis and that they face increased expenses from travel, accommodation and medical costs.
Our Branch would not exist without our members, volunteers and community supporters. We thank them for their contribution.

Timeline photosSurgery in Sydney (1,100km return), 4 treatments of chemotherapy, 17 treatments of radiotherapy and infusions every 3 weeks in Wagga Wagga (260km return) over a 12 month period meant Anna clocked up hundreds of hours of travel. The financial stress and the added emotional strain of being apart from family whilst dealing with a life-threatening illness can be overwhelming. Anna is now cancer free and is a regular volunteer for Can Assist.

After more than 3 years of treatment, 50,000km or 500 hours of driving Tommy is now cancer free and fighting fit.
Childhood cancer is uniquely emotionally draining. The extra financial burdens for families living in rural NSW can be crippling – both parents and often extended family members needing to cut back or stop work all together to make the long journeys necessary for treatment, not to mention petrol and accommodation costs.
