Yass Valley volunteer, Gwen Warmington, received the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Gwen has a long history of community service and volunteering. Gwen showed great vision in working to achieve many benefits for the community including the swimming pool and aged care facilities. She served as a member of the Yass Municipal Council from 1966-1977. The Warmington’s left Yass and lived in Darwin and Bargara for 30 years. Sadly, soon after their return her husband, John died. Gwen knew that she needed to be busy and joined Can Assist, Hospital Auxiliary, Aged Care and Yass Probus. At almost 89, Gwen has remarkable energy and enthusiasm for her voluntary work.

On 7th November volunteers and friends of Yass Valley Can Assist gathered together at the Yass Soldiers Club for the drawing of our Narooma Getaway Raffle. Volunteers had been outselling raffle tickets for weeks and it was our most successful raffle ever.

Following the draw, a delicious cake celebrating Can Assist’s 65th birthday was cut by our eldest volunteer Gwen Warmington.

Members stayed on at Yass Soldiers Club, one of our strongest supporters, and enjoyed dinner together.

On Friday 20th November, Annie Waterhouse and Jean Frost were invited to Yass High School by Ms Bills community class to receive a donation from money raised on Pink Day.

All fundraising activities had to take place within the school due to Covid restrictions and we were thrilled to receive a donation of $3300 to Yass Valley Can Assist.
