Vital partnership between Can Assist Blayney and greenslips.com.au

Media release 17 May 2021: Cancer patients across Blayney, NSW, who rely on their cars to travel to and from treatment will benefit from crucial funding that Can Assist Blayney has received from greenslips.com.au.

Second anniversary since relationship was forged

This year marks the second anniversary since the partnership was forged between greenslips.com.au and Can Assist, a community-based volunteer network that provides financial and practical support to people affected by cancer and living in country NSW. The first Can Assist branch supported was in Orange, and since 2019 greenslips.com.au has contributed to one new branch every month, amounting to $84,000 across NSW.

“We are proud to help Can Assist in its support of rural and regional cancer patients, to raise awareness of this wonderful charity and their work, and to help cancer patients with their CTP green slip insurance,” says Stephen Treacey, the founder and owner of greenslips.com.au, a comparative CTP insurance site.

“To date, we have contributed to 26 branches across NSW, in addition to Can Assist head office. We estimate we have helped support over 260 cancer patients and their families by paying for CTP green slip insurance, ensuring they keep their cars on the road when they need them most – to get to and from treatment. Some of the distances people in rural and remote NSW have to travel to access cancer treatment are immense, and we hope we ease their cancer journey in more ways than one.”

Can Assist Blayney is funded entirely by local donations, local fundraising events, and corporate support such as greenslips.com.au. It provides practical and financial support confidentially to cancer patients to cover medical and pharmaceutical expenses, utilities, rates, food and fuel. What sets Can Assist apart from other charities – and is what attracted greenslips.com.au to the partnership – is that all money raised stays local to help local cancer patients across the district.

Sue Scott, Secretary of Can Assist Blayney, says having a car in the region is “crucial”. “Patients have to go to Orange or Bathurst for oncology, which is a round trip of almost 80km, and for even more specialised treatment, they need to go to Sydney. Some patients could be travelling daily. We have one patient going daily for three weeks.” Sue says. “Lots of clients live out of town, and without their own car they would be lost.”

Ray Burns, who is the current Can Assist Blayney Vice President and was the inaugural President, says the funds from greenslips.com.au to pay for CTP green slip insurance for local cancer patients will be a “big help”.

“Registration is a huge bill, especially for people who are struggling. Combined with the green slip, it really adds up,” he says. “It will help our patients to have a registered vehicle, which is really important in the bush. This sort of donation can have a big impact on a cancer patient and their family. It means they have one less bill to worry about so they can focus on getting better.”

Greater awareness and support needed

Established in 2008, Can Assist Blayney currently support 16 patients of different ages and at different stages of their cancer journey. Sue says the number of people requesting support has fallen, possibly as a result of people not getting medical tests because of the pandemic. COVID-19 also stopped fundraising activities for over a year. “Unfortunately, fundraising also took a hit because of the pandemic,” she says. “Our income dropped 33 per cent, but our expenses rose $10,000 during that period.”

However, the branch is now back fundraising. One of the team’s main fundraising activities is providing catering for events such as wakes and Melbourne Cup lunches, and holding cake stalls. “We always need money to help support our local cancer patients,” adds Ray. “And all money raised locally stays local to help people across the district.”

“Can Assist Blayney currently has around 30 members, but are looking for more to join the team. If we could gain some younger volunteers, particularly those aged 30 and over, that would be great,” says Ray. “We are all volunteers helping our local community, so if we can share the load, it’s so much better for all.”

Hardworking volunteers are the backbone of Can Assist says David Graham, Board member. It is a network of people who want to help.

Volunteers don’t let anyone get in their way of helping. They are like a family in the way they get to know each other and the people who are dealing with cancer. There are about 10 Can Assist branches in the Riverina area. As the volunteers get older, they are looking for some younger volunteers to join Can Assist.

Media release 28 April 2021: Cancer patients across Mudgee who rely on their cars to travel to and from treatment will benefit from crucial new funding that Can Assist Mudgee has received from greenslips.com.au.

The partnership between greenslips.com.au and Can Assist, a community-based volunteer network providing financial and practical support to people affected by cancer and living in country NSW, was forged in 2019. It provides funding to help pay for cancer patients’ green slip insurance. To date, greenslips.com.au has supported 26 Can Assist branches across NSW and is committed to supporting more.

Can Assist Mudgee provides practical and financial support confidentially to cancer patients to cover travel expenses, CTP green slips, fuel, accommodation, groceries, council rates, phone and utility bills.

“The funding from greenslips.com.au will certainly help recipients. It’s another bill they don’t need; we all know they’re not cheap and that they come in at the same time as car registration and often other bills. It’s a stress that cancer patients don’t need – and we want them to focus on getting better,” says Bec Callaghan, President of Can Assist Mudgee. “Such donations allow the patient, or their partner, to take time off work because they have our financial assistance. It allows them to concentrate on their health and family needs.”

Bec explains that having a car is “hugely important” for local cancer patients.

“There is a bus service, but to get to somewhere like Sydney is tough – and after treatment, you don’t want to be on public transport when your immunity is low. When you feel so lousy, vulnerable and tired after treatment, you want privacy and discretion and don’t want to talk to other people,” says Bec.

Jan Pirie, Can Assist Mudgee Secretary, who is also a cancer survivor, agrees.

“A lot of patients travel to Orange, Dubbo or Sydney for treatment,” she says. “Having a car and the privacy to travel in your own vehicle is so important. The funding from greenslips.com.au is marvelous – it will be a huge relief and help in ensuring they can keep their cars on the road.”

Greater awareness and support needed

Can Assist Mudgee supports the whole district within the Mid-Western Regional Council, and each year helps around 40 patients of different ages and who are at different stages of their cancer journey. Currently they are helping 15 patients.

“We support all the rural areas within the area, which is a big area. And there are a lot of small villages,” says Jan.

All money raised for Can Assist Mudgee stays in the community, providing support for locals – but more awareness about the charity is needed.

“It’s so important that people know 100% of the funds stay in our local district; it’s not going anywhere else,” explains Jan. “We urge local cancer patients to please ask for our support because that’s what the money is there for. It’s for any cancer patient in need and isn’t means tested.”

Each year, Can Assist Mudgee needs to raise around $30,000 to support all the requests. “We do get other donations but we need a fair bit of money, because the bills of those we help really mounts up. For example, it can cost $600 a month just for the chemist bills,” says Jan, who in 2020 received the Citizen of the Year Award for her work with Can Assist.

Unfortunately, fundraising has been impacted by the pandemic and Bec says that while the community is happy to help, “all local businesses have been impacted – so COVID took us backwards”. “COVID doesn’t stop you getting cancer and cancer doesn’t discriminate,” she adds.

In addition to donations, Can Assist Mudgee also needs more volunteers “desperately”, Jan adds. “If people can help, we welcome them. We need young people full of energy who care about their community.”

Cancer patients in Shoalhaven get extra support

Cancer patients in the Shoalhaven shire can now get extra support from Can Assist Shoalhaven. Funding from greenslips.com.au will help them keep their cars on the road.

When rural patients are getting treatment for cancer, they often have to travel long distances. Thanks to this funding, they can get help to pay for their greenslips. They value having the extra support by having one more bill paid.

Parkes Shire cancer patients benefit from greenslips.com.au partnership

Parkes Shire cancer patients will benefit from the new partnership between greenslips.com.au and Can Assist Parkes.

Patients in the shire have to travel 100km to Orange, 120km to Dubbo, or 350kms to Sydney for treatment. Most patients use their own car or their family to take them, as it gives a sense of control at a time when they often feel out of control.

Can Assist is there to help with bills and any other tasks that people might need done. It can be a very expensive time and every little bit helps to take some of the pressure off.
