SHINING A LIGHT ON EARLY SIGNS OF CANCER - YELLOWISH COLOUR TO THE SKIN OR EYES

There can be some common early signs and symptoms of cancer to look out for.
If you notice any major changes in the way your body works or the way you feel – especially if it lasts for a long time or gets worse let your doctor know and get checked.

If it is cancer, you’ll give yourself the chance to have it treated early, when treatment is more successful.

The fundraising we do as a branch goes towards helping our locals facing similar challenges as this family. All donations are greatly appreciated by recipients and the branch. One morning 5 year old Tommy Gill from Glen Innes woke up very pale in colour and with notable bruising.

After a visit to the doctor he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle that afternoon and diagnosed with Leukemia.

This was the beginning of a long treatment journey. The Gills travelled over 50,000 kms over the course of Tommy's treatment, more than 150 trips in total. "I couldn't put a number on what we spent .... there was the time off work and all the extra travel ..."

If you require assistance please get in contact. All requests for assistance are kept highly confidential. When Can Assist offered to help me financially I was relieved, travelling, along with medical expenses cost a small fortune. If I had not received help from Can Assist then my only alternative

Would have been to borrow the money or not have treatment. As it was, I did have to borrow money to cover medical expenses as Medicare did not cover some procedures.

If Karen and her husband were living in any other state or territory in the country they would have received a higher rebate – in fact, up to $72 a night higher.

On average, a resident of country NSW will receive $42.32c less a night than the rest of the country. What a disgrace!

Thank you Dr Joe McGirr MP and Helen Dalton MP for helping to bring this injustice to light.
