If Karen and her husband were living in any other state or territory in the country they would have received a higher rebate – in fact, up to $72 a night higher.

On average, a resident of country NSW will receive $42.32c less a night than the rest of the country. What a disgrace!

Thank you Dr Joe McGirr MP and Helen Dalton MP for helping to bring this injustice to light.

I’ll be there!

The Gill family today – Mum Samantha, Dad Lincoln, Jacky, Tommy, Charlotte, Clare.

One morning in 2017, five year old Tommy Gill from Glen Innes woke up very pale in colour and with notable bruising. After a visit to the doctor, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle that afternoon and diagnosed with Leukemia.

This was the beginning of a long treatment journey. After an initial 2 week stay at the hospital, Tommy, his two younger siblings and Mum Sam stayed at the nearby not-for-profit accommodation facility for a further 12 months.

Needing to maintain a family income, Tommy’s dad Lincoln stayed in Glen Innes during the week to continue working. Samantha was unable to return to work. Every Friday night, Lincoln would make the 430km, 5.5 hr journey to Newcastle to be with his family over the weekend.

But the story did not end there. After Tommy returned home he developed a lung infection and was flown by emergency back to Newcastle. Tommy spent a further 4 weeks in hospital, half of which was in ICU.

“I couldn’t put a number on what we spent…. then there was the time off work and all the extra travel, we could not have got through it without the help of charities like Can Assist who provided us with multiple petrol vouchers.”

The Gills travelled well in excess of 50,000 km over the course of Tommy’s treatment; around 150 trips in total. Almost all trips were ineligible for IPTAAS government assistance since most were travelled without the patient.

This is where Can Assist becomes an essential service for country NSW cancer patients just like Tommy's family. After all other available support options are utilised, significant gaps remain. We provide support for more than 10,000 calls for assistance a year and rely 100% on donations to provide this service to ensure access to treatment and care.

Please DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL BRANCH TODAY and help support children like Tommy, and his family in your town, on their cancer journey.

DONATE NOW
Every donation above $2 is tax deductible and gratefully appreciated.

Tommy had numerous stays in Newcastle hospital to treat his Leukemia.
$35 = 3 hours hospital parking
$75 = 1 tank of petrol
$100 = 2 weeks cancer medication prescriptions
$500 = 3 nights in accommodation near treatment
$1,000 = 6 months of feeding equipment

Can Assist has been supporting country people
WITH CANCER SINCE 1955

By providing accommodation, financial assistance and practical support to people from rural and regional areas, we ensure that country people are given equitable access to cancer treatment comparable to their metropolitan neighbours.

Travel and accommodation subsidies for country patients travelling long distances for treatment are set to near double with an overhaul of the IPTAAS scheme announced last night.

“No longer should families need to consider selling their homes or skipping their treatment altogether because they could not afford to get to treatment. We applaud Minister Bronnie Taylor MLC, and the Government, for these changes. They will ease the financial burden placed on people affected by cancer living in country NSW, ensuring they can access the care and treatment they need,” says Can Assist Executive Director, Emma Phillips.

We have near 3,000 volunteers across 55 branches who work together raising funds and distributing help.

Just over a year ago, 64 yr old Jon from Cootamundra was diagnosed with brain cancer. Since then, he has endured two surgeries, 6 weeks of radiotherapy, and now chemotherapy.

Jon’s course of treatment included some 12 trips to Sydney; some 400km one way. Add multiple trips to Wagga Wagga, 6 weeks accommodation in Sydney and the inability to work ,the cost of treatment becomes simply unaffordable. Can Assist provided financial assistance across petrol, accommodation and out of pocket medical expenses.

Assisting our community, locally…

ABOUT US

Can Assist Gundagai was formed in 1985. We assist with costs associated with travel for cancer treatment which may take the form of petrol vouchers, the costs of transport in the community car, travel by rail or air. The branch also makes financial contribution towards accommodation for cancer patients when under going treatment, for example at Lilier Lodge, Wagga Wagga or wherever the treatment centre may be. The costs of medications and dietary supplements may also be subsidised by the branch.

Areas Serviced: Bongalong, Bongongalong, Brungle, Brungle Creek, Burra Creek, Darbalara, Edwardstown, Gundagai, Jackalass, Jones Creek, Muttama, Nangus, Reno, South Gundagai, Tarrabandra, Wagragobilly, Willie Ploma

Financial Assistance

We understand that families struggle to cope with a reduced income as a result of a cancer diagnosis and that they face increased expenses from travel, accommodation and medical costs.

Lilier Lodge

Accommodation Assistance

Lilier Lodge was purpose built by Can Assist and the Cancer Council NSW, together with the support of local and regional communities.

Lilier Lodge provides accommodation for people undergoing cancer treatment at nearby facilities including the Riverina Cancer Care Centre, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Calvary Hospital.

Our 2022 AGM is this Monday, 20 June 6pm at the Gundagai District Services Club. New committee members are always welcome. ... See MoreSee Less

Local legend!!! Shae Smith recently cut her gorgeous long hair, all in the spirit of charity and selfless kindness. Shae had around 50cm of her hair cut, donating it to the World’s Greatest Shave to be made into wigs for cancer sufferers. In addition to that she raised money for our local Can Assist Branch.

So far Shae's fundraiser has donated more than $3,000 and there is more to come. By the time Shae wraps up her fundraising efforts she expects to donate around $5,000, which is truly amazing.

Thank you Shae 👏👏👏. Your generosity will go a long way in supporting local cancer patients. Thanks also to your fellow head shavers who contributed to the fundraising on the night.

ABOUT US

Can Assist Harden – Murrumburrah was formed in 2000 when it broke away from the Young and Boorowa branch following a very generous donation from the O’Connor family. Our branch is very generous with support and we are committed to ensuring that people within our community have access to cancer treatment and care. By providing accommodation, financial assistance and practical support we ensure that the same opportunities and treatment choices are afforded to our residents as those who live in city centres.

Our membership has grown considerably over the last ten years as we welcome and encourage younger members of the community to assist in fundraising for us. Every year we hold a major fundraiser and we have now claimed the 1st weekend of March every year as “Can Assist Weekend”. Various events including Dancing With the Locals in 2019 provide our continuing funds with fantastic support from the local community and businesses. Our events are important social gatherings for our community with all ages encouraged to be involved or attend. Every dollar raised stays local to assist!
YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE.
