Murrumbidgee Region

Assisting our community, locally…

ABOUT US

Can Assist Young and Boorowa was formed in 1988. The branch raises funds to provide financial assistance to people in our local community who are undergoing cancer treatment.

Areas Serviced: Ashville, Berthong, Boorowa, Bribbaree, Bulla Creek, Burrangong, Frogmore, Goba Creek, Godfreys Creek, Kenyu, Kikiamah, Maimuru, Memagong, Milvale, Monteagle, Murringo, Reids Flat, Rye Park, Taylors Flat, Thuddungra, Tubbul, Weedallion, Yannawah, Young

Financial Assistance

We understand that families struggle to cope with a reduced income as a result of a cancer diagnosis and that they face increased expenses from travel, accommodation and medical costs.

Lilier Lodge

Accommodation Assistance

Lilier Lodge provides accommodation for people undergoing cancer treatment at nearby facilities including the Riverina Cancer Care Centre, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Calvary Hospital.

Purpose built by Can Assist and the Cancer Council NSW, with the support of local and regional communities, it is managed by Can Assist. The 21 bed lodge is a warm and supportive home away from home.

Our Supporters

Our Branch would not exist without our members, volunteers and community supporters. We thank them for their contribution.

5 year old Tommy Gill from Glen Innes woke up very pale in colour and with notable bruising.

After a visit to the doctor, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle that afternoon and diagnosed with Leukemia.

This was the beginning of a long treatment journey.

Distance should be no barrier to treatment. Can Assist supports rural and regional cancer patients across NSW access treatment.

Access to radiotherapy is a key driver of health inequality for residents of country NSW.

We urge the NSW government to utilise the federal government grant money which has now been offered by two successive Federal governments to build radiotherapy services, not only in Eurobodalla, but also in Armidale and Grafton. Whilst the treatment itself is often as short as 15 minutes, the frequency, length of treatment, and delivery as an outpatient, make it uniquely expensive for rural residents.

Residents of the Bega electorate currently travel up to 3.5 hours one way for treatment. More radiotherapy services will significantly reduce the burdens on cancer patients and their families.

Limited access (in terms of both distance and cost) to radiotherapy services is a key driver of the health inequality suffered by cancer patients of country NSW; treatments are typically delivered daily for up to 7 weeks. This is expensive.

We join Dr Joe McGirr MP and Helen Dalton MP in support of their petition which calls on the NSW State government to eliminate the medical out of pocket costs incurred by patients being treated in Wagga Wagga, and soon to be incurred by patients at Griffith, when the facilities are up and running there.

You can print and sign the petition by clicking the link below.
