Assisting our community, locally…

ABOUT US

Can Assist Leeton was formed in 1982. Our branch is an enthusiastic and sociable team of volunteers who are always looking for new members. We support our community wholeheartedly and are supported by our community wholeheartedly. We raise funds to provide financial assistance to people in our local community who are undergoing cancer treatment.

Areas Serviced: Barellan, Brobenah, Calorafield, Corbie Hill, Gogeldrie, Leeton, Merungle Hill, Murrami, Stanbridge, Wamoon, Whitton

Financial Assistance

We understand that families struggle to cope with a reduced income as a result of a cancer diagnosis and that they face increased expenses from travel, accommodation and medical costs.

Lilier Lodge

Accommodation Assistance

Lilier Lodge provides accommodation for people undergoing cancer treatment at nearby facilities including the Riverina Cancer Care Centre, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Calvary Hospital.

Purpose built by Can Assist and the Cancer Council NSW, with the support of local and regional communities, it is managed by Can Assist. The 21 bed lodge is a warm and supportive home away from home.

Our Supporters

Our Branch would not exist without our members, volunteers and community supporters. We thank them for their contribution.

5 year old Tommy Gill from Glen Innes woke up very pale in colour and with notable bruising.

After a visit to the doctor, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle that afternoon and diagnosed with Leukemia.

This was the beginning of a long treatment journey.

Distance should be no barrier to treatment. Can Assist supports rural and regional cancer patients across NSW access treatment.

Can Assist Leeton

After being diagnosed with skin cancer, Leonie was told that she would have to travel some 460km to Melbourne for treatment. She would need to find accommodation within walking distance from the clinic and she would need a 24 hour carer to accompany her.

With the prospect of thousands of dollars in medical, travel and food out of pockets, Leonie burst into tears. “Had it not been for Can Assist (who funded Leonie’s accommodation costs) I literally would not have been able to afford access to treatment”.

Leonie travelled near 4,000 km to multiple locations over the course of her treatment.

“Whilst many things we take for granted scream to a halt during cancer treatment much of the mundane daily grind continues on unabated; there’s still plenty of bills to pay, cars to maintain, dishes to wash, lawns to mow, and kids to feed and clothe. Thankfully Leeton Can Assist were there in the background helping out by easing the burden of unexpected costs, thereby lessening our collective worries and thus helping me to more easily focus on getting better.“
